There isn't one single hydroponics, but several systems. The three most common — NFT, DWC and substrate growing — meet different needs. Here's how to tell them apart.
NFT: the nutrient film
In the NFT system, a thin film of solution flows through sloped channels where the plants grow. Ideal for short-cycle leafy greens and herbs, and water-efficient, it is particularly well-suited to commercial production — it's the one we install. Details in the NFT system explained.
DWC: roots in the water
In DWC (deep water culture), the roots are immersed in a permanently oxygenated nutrient solution. Simple and robust, it suits certain salad greens, but requires good management of oxygenation.
Substrate growing
Here, the roots develop in an inert medium (coco fibre, rock wool) drip-irrigated. It's the preferred method for fruiting crops such as tomatoes or strawberries.
Which one to choose?
